Salt water fly fishing is a very fun and thrilling sport. Because of this, the popularity has dramatically risen in the last 30 years. Whether saltwater fly fishing from a small boat in shallow water, standing on the shoreline, or going into the deep sea, salt water fly fishing can be both challenging and satisfying.

One of the biggest factors to success in saltwater fly-fishing is understanding how the tides flow. The water temperature and clarity are two of the biggest factors that are affected by the tides. Besides that, tides affect the movement of the fish. On the coast of the Atlantic and Pacific, the tides rise and fall twice in a day. In other spots along the Gulf of Mexico, the tides may only rise once in 24 hours.

Traditionally, most people who do salt water fly fishing in shallow waters, and often close to the shore. Technically, this is known as inshore fly fishing. Don't be fooled however, you can catch a wide variety of fish from the shore, depending on your location.

A less popular way of fly fishing is deep water fly fishing. This type of fly fishing is done from a boat, in water that is often at least 14 feet deep.

The type of fish most sought after by the saltwater fly fisherman are homebodies and roamers. Roamers cover a vast area of distance in a quick time, and include tuna, Sailfish, and Marlin, to name a few. Homebodies are fish that generally stay in one area, and often school. Homebodies include grouper, snapper, and Rockfish, etc.
